Biography: Manuel Pais Clemente was born in Porto, Portugal. He was awarded a Medical Certificate from Porto University School of Medicine in Porto, Portugal in 1966. He served in the Armed Services from 1969 until 1971 in a Army Hospital, Angola. He was a resident in Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and Harvard University School of Medicine, both in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. (1972-1973). He served as a resident in Otorhinolaryngology at Boston University School of Medicine from 1973 until 1977. In the past he was Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Porto University School of Medicine (1979-2012) and Chief of Service at Hospital de S. João, Porto, Portugal (1983-2006). Currently, he is an Emeritus Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at Porto University School of Medicine. He was appointed Chairman of the National Council for Smoking Prevention in Lisbon (1996-2007) and Chairman of the Center for Optical Technologies in 2002. He is President of the World Voice Consortium since 1994. He is Board Member of the Latin Societies of Otorhinolaryngology since 2000 and Past-President of the Latin Societies of Otorhinolaryngology (2004-2006). He is President of the Portuguese Institute of Tabacology since 2007. He was appointed representative from Portugal of the European Medical Association since 2006 and Vice-President in 2015.
