Dr. Dhan Kuppuswamy is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Cardiology Division at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, South Carolina. He is an expert in the field of signal transduction and has been contributing to the field of cardiac hypertrophyfor the past 20 years. He earned his Masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Madras, India and moved to US as a postdoctoral fellow in 1984. As a Research Associate at Washington University, St. Louis, he obtained extensive training in cell signaling mechanisms, involving growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases and demonstrated for the first time that receptor tyrosine kinases undergo ligand-induced desensitization. He joined as a MUSC faculty in 1994 and employed much of his expertise to cardiology, specifically in understanding how integrin activation and the associated activation of nonreceptortyrosine kinases promote growth and survival of cardiac myocytes in pressure overloaded myocardium.
