Biography: Dr. Ashok Patel is a consultant in the Division of
Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He was born in Kampala, Uganda and trained at
the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta (medical school, 1982-1986) as
well as Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (internal medicine residency: 1987-1990
and pulmonary-critical care fellowship: 1990-1993). For over 25 years, he has
had a busy and active clinical practice at Mayo Clinic focused around the
integrated management of airway disorders such as asthma and COPD. He also enjoys educational exchanges with all
types of learners, including visiting clinicians, medical students, residents, nursing
and allied health professionals. He has
served on several community groups in SE Minnesota (Diversity Council,
Gamehaven Boy Scouts Council, Zumbro Valley Medical Society, and Salvation Army)
and is increasingly engaged in international venues through Rotary
International, Sigma Xi, and American Thoracic Society. Since 2005, he has expanded his scope of
clinical educational outreach to include underserved global health and worked
with several of our colleagues in preparing responder teams for complex
humanitarian emergencies.
