Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Malaysia

The use of medicinal and aromatic plants as traditional medicines and herbal medicines has increased tremendously with 80% of people worldwide utilizing plants for primary health care. The fast growing industry in traditional medicines has caused regulatory bodies to be concerned on the safety, quality and efficacy thus there is a need for a systematic research and development approaches to address the critical issues. Malaysia is also rich in biodiversity and traditional knowledge of medicinal plants usage for herbal medicines. However it is not fully documented. Therefore FRIM has over the years started out bioprospecting research, traditional knowledge documentation and working with the herbal practioners and herbal industry in producing quality herbal, cosmetics and personal care products. During the past decade, FRIM has developed many standardization protocols for medicinal and aromatic plants from upstream to downstream and identified potential medicinal plants for product development. Some of FRIM key research areas (traditional knowledge, conservation, post harvest technology, standardization, bioactivity, formulation and quality control) will be presented in this paper.

Holistic and Healthcare Practices by Traditional Healers from Western Ghats Region of India

Pramod J. Hurkadale

KLE College of Pharmacy, India

The traditional healers give first-hand information about the healthcare system of the local community. They are a rich source of knowledge with extensive attention which has been used as a foundation for many modern medications in various branches of medicine. The age-old traditional information is diminishing rapidly due to various factors. Hence, there is an urgent need of documenting the knowledge in addition to this stringent quality control is the obstacle for acceptance of traditional plant-based medicines, along with disparity among the species or alternatives that need to be addressed for their quality declaration of the ethnomedicinal plants. The presence of rich ethno-medico-botanical knowledge in this region appears to be at crossroads with the threat of extinction and decreasing interest towards traditional medicine amongst the new generation has to be addressed for the cause of depletion of these medicinal plants. The traditional remedies are used by more than 70% of the population and there has been resurgence in the scientific assessment of medicinal plants with their therapeutic activity and newer techniques have been developed for such exploration.
