Nurse Prescribing - Key Advancements, Professional Development and Key Therapeutics

Omar Ali

University of Portsmouth, UK

In the UK nurse prescribing has been well established and indeed spread to other professions including pharmacist, dietitian, optomotrist and other allied healthcare practitioners. The UK experience has found improved patient experience, reduced waiting times to see doctors and areas of specialism whereby nurses take the lead on medicines [i.e, asthma nurses and diabetes nurses]. This presentation shares our experience and how it can apply to the UAE, sharing best practice with regulatory frameworks, professional development and therapeutic pharmacy practice. We share experience of enablers within the healthcare environment and cultural expectations and barriers to nurse prescribing, including resistance from other peers! This presentation concludes with the increasingly demanding role of nurse prescribing and how the future role could develop for the nursing profession.
